Finding purpose on the blah, “meh,” and ordinary days

Upside down building
Sometimes things just seem upside down

We all have those days—days that just feel off. Not tragic or dramatic, just low. A little moody. A bit blah. A “meh” kind of day. You’re not even sure why, because everything around you seems fine. Good, even. But something inside just doesn’t feel right.

Today was one of those days for me. And instead of crawling back into bed or numbing out with a spoon and a carton of French Silk, I’m choosing to sit down and write. Not because I have answers, but because I’ve learned that God often speaks the loudest in these quiet, off-kilter moments.

So, here’s what I’m learning in the messy middle—mental note: future blog title—about God, life, and what it means to keep going even when the day feels like a dud.

1. Feelings Can Be Fickle, Fleeting, and Faulty

Today looked great on paper. A powerful message at church. Worship music that drew me into Gods presence. Meaningful conversations with friends. My sweet husband even brought me flowers. I felt healthy. The weather was beautiful. A+ day right?

Were there a few things on my mind that were concerning, sure, but nothing to justify my C- mood.

And yet? I felt blah. Sad. Off. Moody. It was a good reminder that my emotions don’t always reflect truth. They change quickly and can’t always be trusted to lead the way.

2. I Prayed Anyway

I didn’t feel like praying today. That’s not the norm for me, but it was real for me today. Still, I did it anyway—because prayer isn’t about how I feel. It’s about connection, obedience, and faith.

I’m so grateful for the years I’ve spent growing with God through prayer. That history reassures me that even when I feel nothing—He’s still there. He still hears me. And that’s enough to keep me showing up.

“The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth.”—Psalm 145:18

3. I Resisted the Urge to Let My Feelings Run the Show

Believe me, I had a moment today where I wanted to just sit in it. Gripe. Complain. Eat my emotions in the form of frozen chocolate goodness and not change out of my pajamas.

But I didn’t.

I got up. I made good choices. I even wrote this blog post—which, let’s be honest, deserves a tiny gold star sticker in my imaginary planner.

4. I’m Not Really Looking for a Gold Star

Ok, let’s be real - I am fully aware that pushing through on an off day does not deserve a gold star. But to Jesus, it all matters. When I finally meet Jesus face to face, I want to hear Him say:

“Well done, good and faithful servant.”—Matthew 25:21

And when He asks, “What did you do with what I gave you?” (paraphrased from Matthew 25:14–30), I want to be able to say,“I showed up—even on the ordinary, ‘meh’ days.”

Because to him even those count.

When the Day Feels Small, the Work Still Matters

Life brings resistance in all shapes and sizes. Sometimes it comes through heartbreak or loss. Other times, it’s just a low-energy, “what’s-the-point” kind of day. But if I can keep moving forward with a smile on my face and a prayer in my heart on days like this, then I’ll be more ready when the real storms come.

Today was resistance training. And that’s okay.

So, thank You, Father, for helping me see the upside of being down. You’re teaching me to move forward, not based on how I feel—but based on who You are. And with You, even the blah days can have purpose.

Scripture to Reflect On
