Learning to Trust God When Life Doesn’t Make Sense

When forgetting your glasses, your credit card, and how to remove a pen cap turns into a lesson in grace.

I’m having quite the day—
a nothing-left-to-do-but-laugh-at-myself kind of day.
An it-showed-promise-but-then-I-got-involved kind of day.
Here's what happened.
Yesterday, the delightful bookstore “No Shelf Control” down by the beach in Saint Augustine offered to carry my book. Yay! As a brand-new author, I’m over the moon.
Today, when I brought the books in, I admitted to the patient, easy-going owner that I had zero clue what the protocol was. She kindly walked me through it (I never claim to have it all together). Then she asked me to autograph the copies—no problem, right? Wrong.
I’d forgotten my readers; I couldn’t see a thing.
I declared the pen was broken—to which she sweetly informed me it would work, once I removed the cap. Oops.
I finally scribbled something that may or may not be legible, (no readers).
Next, surrounded by temptation, I decided to shop in her charming store. She showed me around, and I found two books to devour—except now my only credit card failed. Five swipes, zero luck.
“Do you have Apple Pay?” she asked.
“Sure!” I said—only to discover I absolutely did not.
I left empty-handed, only then remembering a letter from my credit-card company about “paying the wrong account.” Oops again. Moral of the story: I still have no idea what I’m doing!
Which brings me to the point. We don’t have to get every detail sorted out for God to work. Sometimes the best move is to stay close to the One who already has it figured out—close enough to hear Him whisper:
“Susan, just show up—prayed-up.
Let them see how steady I am when you wobble.
Stick near Me, and watch Me turn your uh-ohs into aha moments.
I’ve got this… and I’ve got you.”
So, if you’re having a day—or a season—where it feels like you’re barely hanging on, remember: God is hanging on to you. Trust Him when life doesn’t make sense, and He’ll guide your steps through every I-have-no-idea-what-I’m-doing-but-I-know-Someone-who-does kind of day.
Maybe that’s the point: clinging to our Father’s hand when life feels topsy-turvy—because closeness is exactly what He wants.
🍃 Prayer
Dear God, I’m reminded that “apart from You I can do nothing” (John 15:5). I’m trusting You to order my steps, open the right doors, bless the work of my hands, and turn confusion into clarity. Use me as a vessel to pour Your love out on the world around me. And on days when this vessel looks a little shabbier than it should, remind my heart that I’m still Yours—still a daughter of the King—still beautiful in Your eyes—and that You’re working all things for my good and Your glory, even on my fake-it-until-I-make-it kind of days. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
🍃 Scripture to Reflect On
“But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.”—2 Corinthians 12:9
🍃 Your Turn
When was the last time you felt like you had no idea what you were doing?
What step of trust can you take today to stay close to the One who does know?
Take a moment to journal or pray about it. Write down one truth from God’s Word that steadies you, and speak it aloud each day this week.Feel free to share in the comments—I’d love to hear how God is reminding you that He’s got this… and He’s got you.
