Speak the Name

There’s something about names. We agonize over finding the perfect name for our children. We pick just the right one to match our pet’s personality. We even name our fantasy football leagues and group chats like they’re something official (because sometimes, they kind of are).
But there’s one name—just one—that carries more weight than all the rest.
Jesus.
Scripture says it plainly:
“And His name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace…” (Isaiah 9:6)
“Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place and gave Him the name that is above every name…” (Philippians 2:9)
So why does the name of Jesus hold power?
Because it represents who He is, what He’s done, and the full authority He’s been given by the Father. The name Jesus isn’t just a label—it carries His identity, His victory, His authority, and His presence.
When we speak His name we’re calling on the living Savior who conquered death, silenced hell, and now reigns in power.
The name of Jesus is so feared in the demonic realm that it gets censored here on earth.
In over 50 countries today, the open worship or public mention of the name Jesus can lead to arrest, imprisonment, persecution—or worse. Bibles are banned. Churches are forced underground. And yet, no one is outlawing the names Buddha or Muhammad.
There’s something different about Jesus. Something the enemy fears and the world resists.
Why? Because His name carries world shaping power.
In the Gospels, demons didn’t argue with Jesus—they begged Him not to torment them (Mark 5:7–13). They recognized His authority before most people around Him did. In Acts 3, Peter healed a lame man—not with a formula or performance—but simply by declaring:
“In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.” – Acts 3:6
And the man did.
That’s the kind of authority His name holds. Not superstition. Not magic. Just pure, holy power rooted in the truth of who He is.
In life’s more difficult moments—though I’d love to cry out with an eloquent, scripture-filled prayer for help—I sometimes just can’t find the words. And all I can do is whisper one name:
Jesus.
But that one word? That one name?
It carries weight in both Heaven and earth.
“…at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth…” (Philippians 2:10)
That means depression must bow.
Disease must bow.
Fear must bow.
Anxiety, addiction, bitterness, shame—they all must bow.
Whatever name has been trying to claim authority over your life, it doesn’t stand a chance in the presence of the name Jesus.
Heaven knows it. Hell fears it. And we get to speak it.
Jesus.
It’s not a complicated prayer. It’s not the kind that earns a chorus of "Amen's" in a women’s Bible study. But it’s real. And when we speak His name with faith and reverence, Heaven moves and darkness trembles.
So the next time your heart is heavy or your strength feels thin—when you don’t know what else to say—call on the only name that carries eternal, unquestioned authority.
Jesus.
